To support this worthy cause, UPAAA has fund raising activities throughout the year. Please check our Events page often so you could participate and join in this cause.
Upon its inception in 1908, UP has been designated as the national university of the country. Partly subsidized by the government, the university opens opportunities for all qualified Filipino youth to receive the exceptional standard of education offered by UP regardless of their economic standing. Scholarships funded by government agencies and private institutions, as well as a socialized tuition scheme, have been made available to financially disadvantaged students. Unfortunately, although financial assistance and subsidies have been extended, there is still a great need for monetary support and other economic resources to enable more deserving but underprivileged Filipino students to obtain a university education.
The Scholarship committee continuously reviews the requirements and selection process to address present times. The requirement right now is that the U.P. student with very low family income will come from a different U.P. Campus every year the fund is awarded. In 2019, a student taking B.S. Agriculture from U.P. Los Banos was selected because of the low enrollment in that college. The Scholarship given was to encourage students to enroll in Agriculture. This year 2022, the committee decided to select a scholar who belongs to an indigenous group. A student from UP Baguio was then selected.

B.S. Nursing, UP Manila
Message from Kate....
Thank you so much for your kind words and for the generous support from the UP Alumni Association of Alberta. I truly appreciate this opportunity, and I’m grateful for the trust that UPAAA has placed in me.
I began my journey as a nursing student after seeing firsthand the challenges caused by the shortage of healthcare workers. During the pandemic, my family needed to send a loved one to the hospital, but no facility could accept her due to limited staff and resources. That experience made me realize how crucial it is to have enough healthcare professionals, and it motivated me to pursue this path. I want to be someone who can reach those with limited access to care and make a meaningful impact in the community.
Pursuing a degree in BS Nursing has been a deeply personal journey for me. My goal is not only to excel academically but also to develop the skills and compassion necessary to make a meaningful impact in healthcare. I am especially passionate about community health and aspire to contribute to improving healthcare accessibility, particularly for underserved populations. Though this journey has been challenging, the support from my family, friends, UPAAA members and sponsors gives me the encouragement to keep going. Your generosity reminds me that I am not alone in this—your support is helping me turn my goals into reality. The generosity of UPAAA and its members inspires me to give back in any way I can. I am committed to paying this forward—whether through volunteer work, mentoring, or actively participating in initiatives that promote health and education. Once again, thank you for this incredible support. I look forward to staying connected with UPAAA and hopefully contributing to its mission in the future.
Best regards,
Kate
