Incorporated in 2012, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta (UPAAA) is a not-for-profit organization which aims to unify the UP alumni in the Province of Alberta in Canada towards the goal of harnessing the UP spirit of leadership, excellence, and social responsibility of its members, guided by the University's mandate and values, for the benefit of the alumni and our community here in Alberta and beyond.
The UPAAA is working towards its accreditation with the UP Alumni Association.
In the fall of 2011, the first president, Consuelo E. Munar initiated to revive the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta, Calgary Chapter (UPAAAC) which has been in hiatus for over five (5) years. Only a dozen enthusiastic UP alumni showed up after another attempted meeting. Noli Nolasco (UP Vet Med ’73) suggested to organize a UP Christmas reunion with the goal of attracting "a much bigger crowd". On December 2, 2011, a big number of UPians gathered at Pacific Hut restaurant by 17th Avenue SE for a Christmas reunion. Several co-founders of the UPAAAC including Alberto Cachero (BSME’59), Froilan Edillon (BSChE’72), Felix Guerrero (BSA’76), Noli Nolasco (Vet.Med’73), Teresita A. Nolasco (BSN’69, MN’74, Mayi-Arcellana Panlilio(BSc.’77, Magna Cum Laude), Vladimir Panlilio (BSME’76, MEng’79) and Consuelo E. Munar (BA’68) graced the occasion. It was a very joyful event. It was here that Noli Nolasco gave the suggestion to elect new officers for the UPAAAC. By acclamation, Consuelo (Chit) Munar was handed the key to the UPAAAC leadership. Don De Gracia was elected Vice-President; Jhoanna del Rosario, Secretary; Ivy Chua, Treasurer; Jerelyn Aldon, Auditor; Froilan Edillon, Peng Ventura, and Rogel Miranda, Directors.
On February 19, 2012, the first Management Committee(ManCom) was held at the Basement Room of the Calgary Public Library, Forest Lawn Branch. Main agenda topics were: Registration of the organization; UPAAA financial and membership status; 2012 direction and focus of the organization, and the creation of committees such as Social and Cultural, Membership, Sports and Professional Development. Two initial goals were also discussed, namely; creating a more vibrant alumni membership and establishing ways to implement objectives of the alumni association.
On March 18, 2012, Vladimir Panlilio conducted a computer workshop for the ManCom hoping to create a website for the organization. The old drafted Constitution and By-Laws of the UPAAAC was also reviewed and edited, a copy of which was submitted to the Alberta Services Corporate Registry Office, together with the application to register. The application was sent back to the President with a 'DEFICIENT' stamp on it. The government agency advised Ms. Munar not to maintain the title University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta (Calgary Chapter) due to non-compliance of a vital government regulation for a number of years. The new Management Committee immediately decided to drop the "Calgary Chapter" from the title to comply with Alberta Registry's requirement. The government agency required a Letter from the President of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City to allow the UPAAAC to use the university name and, also, several sections of the By-Laws needed to be revised. In early May, 2012, Ms. Munar immediately created and sent a letter to President Alfredo E. Pascual. A response dated June 19, 2012 from President Pascual was received and sent to Alberta Registry in Edmonton immediately together with the revised Constitution and By-Laws. Ms. Munar also notified another government agency, Alberta Advanced Education about UP President Alfredo Pascual’s letter.
Mid-July, 2012, Ms. Munar received the Certificate of Incorporation for the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta (Corporate Access #5016899402).
We look forward to your service leadership in the next 3 years. Padayon!
