From UPAAA
Thank you, Bert Cachero, for having been an inspirational and supportive peer, mentor, adviser and leader to UP Alumni in Alberta, to the members of UPAAA Calgary and the Filipino-Canadian community. As co-founder, you helped plant the seeds that continue the UP Alumni Association of Alberta to grow, As a Filipino pioneer immigrant in Alberta, you were instrumental in blazing trails for Filipino-Canadian engineers and professionals especially in the oil and gas industry. You left big shoes to fill as a model for the rest of the Filipino-Canadians in Alberta to succeed despite the challenges, excel in their chosen fields, serve community groups and make a dent in the Canadian mainstream society.

I’ve known Manong Bert for a very long time. Our close association to each other started and developed at the time the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta (Calgary) chapter was founded. Fred Pascual, a Professional Geologist, was the first president of the association. Manong Bert became the president after Fred. I served as the Secretary-Treasurer for 5 years. Our working relationship leading the organization was marked with camaraderie, high level of cooperation, efficiency and great support. During his term, in the early 90s, he patiently encouraged and taught most of the UP members and their spouses to pick up or learn to play golf. Golf became UP’s #1 fund-raiser for our organization to fulfill our noble goals.
During my 3-year term as UPAAA President, through the annual golf tournaments initiated by Manong Bert and other UP golf aficionados and their friends, we were able to create and establish for the first time, a UP Scholarship Fund. For that, we were able to support a UP scholar in Diliman who pursued a bachelor of science degree in applied physics graduating in 2018 with a Magna cum laude distinction leading to higher level of learning like PhD In physics. I will never forget his remarks to me when I shared the good news to him. Manong Bert said, “you’re a true leader Chit. You did a great job.”
Bert and Ate Neri made frequent travels so our communication to each other during special events is mainly via email. One Thanksgiving message from them touched us. They mentioned they fondly recall the days when our kids were very young and involved in music, I sold to them a box of very sweet Florida oranges as a fundraising endeavour. That meant a great lot to us.
We will always cherish and remember Manong Bert’s example of professionalism, diligence, advocacy for exercise and health, camaraderie and great friendship.

Praying for Mr. Bert’s eternal repose and thanking him for everything he did for UPAAA, our community, and Alberta’s oil and gas industry.

Tito Bert and Ate Neri were good friends of my older Sister Lynn Caral(Jun) way back from Edmonton.
Upon arrival here in Calgary we were introduced to them. Froi was working in PRRI ( Petroleum Recovery Research Institute) at the University of Calgary. His previous job was with NSDB (National Science and Development Board) in the Philippines. Tito Bert encouraged Froi to do his Masters in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary and to take the APEGA Exams as well.

I’ve only known Tito Bert for a few years, starting from when I joined UPAAAC in 2013 as a newcomer to Canada. I never really had a close relationship with him and Tita Neri but from the get go he came across as a passionate individual whose presence during events and get-togethers made sure that UPAAAC lived up to the principles that he and other founding members have been advocating for.
Thank you, Tito Bert for your legacy. UPAAAC is here, making a difference to the best of our abilities, because people like you inspired us to do so.

Bert was a good friend who taught me that golf is not only about how low you can score. It’s about how much fun you have with your friends.
Thank you Bert for inviting me to your church golf tournament which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for inviting to our last game together at your home course in Boulder Creek. Thank you for the free round and food.
Rest In Peace my friend. God bless!

Mr. Bert has a positive and enthusiastic energy about him.
He has been an inspiration to me as a co-alumnus and now as a board member.
I am honored to have known him as one who has built his community
with joyful and humble demeanor, and certainly a model I am looking up to.
Mr. Bert you are a genuine UP breed of selfless service, and
will certainly be remembered by me as far more than a golf aficionado.

Tito Bert, the unassuming pioneer of UPAAA, is one of those who made me feel welcomed when I first joined the association. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that my thesis adviser and professor in UP was his high school classmate. That connection made us instantly feel like kindred spirits.
You are a pathfinder, Tito Bert, and your contribution to the professional recognition of Filipinos in Alberta is an achievement of a lifetime. Thank you for your legacy.

We are so fortunate that we have met the founding members of UP Alumni Association of Calgary during the early years, and Manong Bert was one of them. We can say that he was one of the driving force to pull together and maintain our Club, the UPAAC throughout the years. We were so glad to see him and his wife Manang Neri at the UPAAC summer picnic last year (during the pandemic 2021) at South Glenmore Calgary.
Goodbye Manong Bert. You will be really missed by us, members of UPAAC.
From Lou Celis
Tito Bert and golf. He would light up everytime we would talk about the Invitational UP golf tournament. I remember that time when he learned that I started to play the sport. He would always make me feel welcome in UP tournaments. He made sure that the female contingent in this sport would also get noticed. I will miss him and the stories that he would animatedly tell us about his early days in Calgary. My deepest condolences to Tita Neri and family.
From Nancy Pascual
Manong Bert was one of the leaders of the UP Alumni Association when I first met him in 2004. Manong Bert was very kind and was very welcoming to everyone especially to us newcomers. A few years later, we met again in some UP activities and in one of the UP At Kaibigan Golf Tournaments and he still remembered who I was. That is how he made everyone feel -- you matter, you are a friend and colleague. Thank you Manong Bert for all that you've done for the UP Alumni Association in Calgary. We will continue working for the success of the organization. We will miss you very much. I will pray for your eternal rest.

A shocking news for me and my wife Tessie. Bert was a long-time family friend and a golf buddy. He was a co-founder of the UPAAAC. He contacted me last week for a golf game at Boulder creek, G.C. where he has a stock share. We finally set it up for May or June when weather permits. Farewell, dear friend. God has a place for you in His domain. Have peace in your eternal rest.

Dear Manang Neri,
I wish I have been there to celebrate Manong Bert’s celebration of life with you.
I will miss him. You and Manong Bert is family to me. I Remember the first time I met him at the election of the first UPAAAC officers in March of 1989 at my Canyon Meadows home. I remember us moving the piano to the second floor. The piano is still on the same spot since. Manong Bert is a mentor, an advisor, a friend, my Manong and at times my father. Manong Bert was there to help members of the UPAAAC to learn how to play golf. He took a special time with me. I remember him taking time off to bring me to McCall Golf Course the first time. I birdied one of the hardest hole in the course. That day became our bond and will always talk about it every time we have a chance to revisit. Manong Bert will always be there for me. I remember him taking me golfing on my 40th birthday celebration as they planned my surprise birthday party and it works. Manong Bert was always there to support and protect me. During my stint as the Honorary Consul General, Manong Bert wrote a letter to protect me. I will always remember Manong Bert . Rest in Peace Manong Bert. I know you will always be there for me.
Thank you for the support, the experience and I will always love remembering our time together.
